A Santa Fe film made in the mid-1950s takes a look at Santa Fe's past and present as preparations are made to meet the challenges posed by the future. Steam is represented by Display Locomotive No. 1, Cyrus K. Holiday, a 2-8-0, and 2-10-4 Texas type No. 5034. We see the 5034 heading into the roundhouse symbolically ending the steam era on the Santa Fe. Shining Warbonnet F-units, E-units, and Alco PAs abound in this film. We even get a cab ride and see early mechanized tie and steel gangs laying some of the first welded rail. There is an excellent segment on the San Francisco Bay ferry system. There are several safety lessons-some humorous, some somber-for example, a motor car being struck by a speeding passenger train. The theme of the film is that the only absolute on the Santa Fe is change itself. Here is your opportunity to see how Santa Fe has met the Challenge for Tomorrow in the 35 years since this film was made.
