The First Two Years of Building the Channel Tunnel
Construction of the Channel Tunnel was begun in 1988 on both the Calais and Dover sides of the English Channel. The first steps were to build the enormous facilities that were needed to support the construction of two running tunnels and one service tunnel stretching 50 kilometers below the Channel bed. In this Eurotunnel film, you'll witness the construction efforts that led to installation of three enormous boring machines - the gigantic TBNs developed especially for this porject. On the Calais side, the French are carving out a cavernous underground plant, while under Shakespeare Cliff near Dover the English are creating a huge land platform. Miles of new tracks are laid for the trains that will service the Chunnel, one of the most complex and important enginering projects ever attempted!
