Daylight Freedom Special: In March of 2002, Daylight-type locomotive 4449 pulled the Columbia-Deschutes Special passenger excursion from Portland to Bend, Oregon and return. The former Southern Pacific 4-8-4 was repainted into the American Freedom Train colors it had worn from 1975 until 1981. Pentrex was there to cover the 2-day trip. These still pictures are actual scenes ("frame captures") from the Pentrex video Daylight Freedom Special.

The auxiliary tender, which originally served with a cab-forward locomotive, carries a 21st Century patriotic slogan.
The train has traversed the Columbia River Gorge, turned south onto the Oregon Trunk Railway, and works upgrade through the Deschutes River Canyon.
After climbing out of the canyon, the special rolls across central Oregon's plateau enroute to Bend.
The Crooked River Bridge is a popular photo spot.
On its return trip to Portland, the 4449 glides downgrade along the Deschutes River.
A BNSF freight precedes the passenger special on the former SP&S main line along the Columbia River.
Our camera crew is pacing the 4449 as it pops out of a rock tunnel on the Washington side of the Columbia River.
