Steam to the Grand Canyon: On August 19, 2002, former Santa Fe steam locomotive 3751 departed Los Angeles on a week-long trip to Williams, Arizona and return, for the National Railway Historical Society's annual convention. Pentrex camera crews covered the entire round trip, plus a side trip from Williams to Grand Canyon on August 24. These still pictures are actual scenes ("frame captures") from the Pentrex video Steam to the Grand Canyon.
Departing Los Angeles Union Station, 3751 pulls its train past Terminal Tower.
Traffic is jammed on the San Bernardino Freeway but 3751 is cruising along at track speed on the Metrolink San Gabriel Subdivision.
In south El Monte, this sweeping flyover bridge carries the excursion train over Union Pacific's former SP Sunset Route.
3751 descends from another flyover bridge as it approaches the former Santa Fe station in San Bernardino, California.
Midway through its climb up Cajon Pass, the train is about to cross under Interstate Highway 15.
A westbound Union Pacific stack train meets the steam special at Summit.
On the second morning, 3751 pulls its train across the Colorado River and into Arizona at Topock.
The rich Santa Fe heritage is clearly visible in Kingman Canyon as the special train meets westbound stacks.
West of Williams Junction, 3751 crosses over the Grand Canyon Railway. GCRy has posed engine 4960 for the event.
