One of the most exciting tourist railroads in the United States is the Grand Canyon Railway in northern Arizona. Operating on an historic rail line originally opened by Santa Fe in 1901, it offers the unique combination of great scenery, high speed runs, exquisitely maintained steam and diesel locomotives, and vintage passenger cars. And its destination is one of the most spectacular sights on earth!Follow the daily Williams Flyer excursion train pulled by steam engine 4960, a former CB&Q 2-8-2 which was thoroughly rebuilt in Grand Canyon's own shops. Chief Mechanical Officer Bob Franzen explains what was involved in bringing the engine back to almost-new condition. Then ride in the cab of Alco FPA-4 6773 as it pulls another Williams Flyer to the Canyon. This former CN unit was also overhauled in the Grand Canyon's shops. A shop tour shows sister locomotive 6793 which was the very last streamlined Alco built by Montreal Locomotive Works.
A special Railfan Weekend features the 4960 doubleheading with engine 18, a former LS&I 2-8-0. You're trackside for all the photo runbys and onboard the 18 for a cab ride. Visits to the railway's well-equipped shops, its museum in the former Harvey House at Williams, and the El Tovar Hotel at the Canyon's rim round out your tour of this fascinating railroad. All aboard!
