The Early Baldwin Diesels

Take a step back in time to the scenic southern slopes of California's majestic Mount Shasta. The McCloud River Railroad, which was built to haul logs and lumber products out of the northern California wilderness, is in full operation and Pentrex takes you on a retrospective tour of this unique shortline.

The years are 1948 through 1955 and the McCloud's six new Baldwin diesel locomotives are being placed in service. You'll see engines number 28 and 29 in multiple unit working a two-section train over the mainline switchback at Signal Butte. Then you'll go on board the McCloud's ancient Russell snowplow as both diesel and steam engines plow the heavy winter snows from the mainline over Dead Horse Pass to Ponderosa.

You'll see the construction of the McCloud's thirty-two mile Burney Branch and then witness its opening, which was highlighted by a Golden Spike Special pulled by venerable steam locomotive number 25.

John Kirkland's exquisite 16mm photography brings the McCloud to life in this exciting and informative look at the McCloud River Railroad.
