The Needles SubdivisionSanta Fe's route across California's Mojave Desert is an essential link in the country's cross-country mainline. The Needles Subdivision, which runs between Needles and Barstow, traverses some of the most barren desert scenery to be found in the United States. Rugged and worn mountains frame the stark mountain vistas, making a haunting setting for high-powered train action.
Santa Fe's mainline is high density, big time railroading at its best. Train after train crosses over this desolate stretch of railroad each day, making it one of the busiest lines in the country. Red and silver Warbonnet paint on the newer locomotives appears to leave brilliant streaks as the engines sprint across the line. Long grades cause the trains to work hard as they climb up and over the hills.
Pentrex takes you to a vantage point overlooking Ash Hill to watch heavy trains working their way over the grade. Video graphics are included to help identify different photo locations throughout the presentation.
The roar of diesels and the stark beauty of the landscape fill the screen as we explore this desolate and remote desert crossing. So come along for this informative photo-journalistic tour of Santa Fe's Mojave Mainline.
