Wheels of Progress. Rock Island produced this film in the 1950s to show the public how a modern railroad operation works. Loaded with runbys of famous Rock Island trains, the film tells the story of America at work and play. The Rock Island promotes itself as the perfect system between east and west, highlighting its ability to move both freight and passengers over its modern rail system. We are taken on visits to its yards and dispatcher's office, and get a good look at both steam and diesel engines. The is a great film for fans of the Rock Island, and everyone will enjoy the shots of trains crossing the bridge over the Cimmaron River in Kansas.
Big Trains Rolling. This classic 1955 American Association of Railroads film, produced in cooperation with the Rock Island Railroad, salutes the great American Dream. It shows how America has prospered from its natural resources and by hard work. Featured in the film is a trip aboard the Santa Fe Super Chief. We travel to the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal to buy our tickets and then board this sleek stainless steel train. Along the way we are shown the modern conveniences that passengers enjoyed during the 1950s. We also visit the Railway Express car and watch the mail being sorted by armed postal workers. This film is filled with runbys of such great railroads as Western Maryland, Great Northern, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Baltimore & Ohio, Denver & Rio Grande Western, along with many more.
