The West
Pentrex takes you back to the late 1950s for a close-up look at the waning years of steam locomotives in operation on America's western railroads.
The mighty Challengers of the Union Pacific are still providing helper service over Utah's Wasatch Mountains. We also see the powerful Big Boys at work on Sherman Hill. UP's Consolidations and 0-6-0s toil about their switching duties, and the sleek 800-series Northerns are seen working in both freight and passenger service.
On the Southern Pacific, you'll view Pacifics in San Francisco Peninsula commuter service, 0-6-0s making up the City of San Francisco at the Oakland Mole, and the famous GS-4s working in both freight and passenger service in California's San Joaquin Valley.
Witness the stout 2-10-2s of the Colorado & Southern, equipped with auxiliary tenders, working in helper service out of Cheyenne. Then travel to the Great Western Railway, headquartered in Loveland, Colorado. Steamer 51 performs switching duties in the yards; then we go out onto the plains to watch 2-10-0 Decapod number 90 powering freight drags.
These exceptional views were captured on 16mm film by noted rail photographer Bruce Ward.
