The Gallup SubdivisionNature provides the exquisite red rock bluffs, mesas and canyons of western New Mexico, and Santa Fe delivers train after train powered by red and silver warbonnets. The resulting combination is a stunning picture that's the essence of Santa Fe railroading across the Gallup Subdivision.
Our tour of the Gallup Sub starts in Belen and works west across the line to the Arizona border. Westbounds can be seen climbing the steep grade out of Belen on their way to Dalies, a major junction that leads out across the desert and past rock walls of bluffs and mesas. An Amtrak AMD-103 locomotive, pulling the Southwest Chief, speeds by an old corral at Quirk, creating a sharp contrast of the Old West and the new. Near Baca, an Escalante Western coal train with its brightly painted locomotives heads down the Lee Ranch Sub. From scenic vantage points along the entire route, you'll spot Santa Fe's Super Fleet hauling trains of high-priority freight across the state.
Many locations are photographed under the low, early morning sun when long shadows and pastel hues enrich the stunning southwestern landscapes and the trains glow in vivid detail. A hundred and eighty miles of heavy-duty railroading, Santa Fe style, through the Land of Enchantment, is here for your enjoyment, in Pentrex's Santa Fe's New Mexico Mainline - The Clovis Subdivision.
