The early 1950s were good years for the Baldwin Locomotive Works and the Southern Pacific. Both companies were at their zenith; SP was replacing its steam fleet with diesels, which kept Baldwin busy producing the new locomotives. Originally shot on 16mm film by former Baldwin employee and author John Kirkland, this show documents various Baldwins being delivered to, and operating on the SP.
You'll see the delivery of "factory fresh" S-12s in March 1951 and October 1952. Watch as six Baldwin AS-616s are placed into service on October 16, 1951 and learn about the DRS-6-6-1500/1 in operation near Placerville that was being tested for Bunker C fuel conversion. Enjoy Baldwin-powered trains, ferry moves, and an interchange at the Diamond Match Company where two Shay locomotives were in service.
Complementing the unique footage is statistical data including builder specs and dates, rosters, and line drawings. A special bonus includes the tragic results after three AS-616s went into the Napa River due to an open swing bridge.
The information and scenes of the pristine SP Baldwins contained in this video make a great addition to any collection.
