Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work on one of Amtrak's premier passenger trains? Pentrex joined the crew of the Coast Starlight at Los Angeles Union Station and traveled with them straight through to Seattle, interviewing engineers, conductors, and service personnel along the way. We'll take you behind the scenes, into the services and support world that passengers never get to know. The Starlight's workers are the stars of this show, putting in grueling days of labor to make sure passengers have the best experience possible.Known as Amtrak's "premier train," the Coast Starlight provides passengers with the best scenery and service that railroading has to offer. Amtrak staffers are proud to be part of the Starlight crew, and consider it a top-class assignment, in spite of having to work 14- to 16-hour days. Jay Fountain, in charge of passenger services, says it's not uncommon to put in a week and a half's work during the 4-day round trip.
Pentrex takes you into the cab of the Starlight to hear Alan Danielle, engineer of train #14, describe what it's like to be at the controls. The conductors, chefs, waitresses, and entertainers reveal what it is about their jobs that draws them to life aboard the Coast Starlight. As one employee quoted, "It's not so much where you go, but how you get there that matters."
